Speech & Language Therapy

Speech & Language Therapy for Children & Adolescents with Autism

Many individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) require Speech and Language therapy. Speech and Language therapy is designed to coordinate the mechanics of speech with the meaning and social use of language. Our Speech and Language Therapists utilize proven methods to address a range of challenges often faced by an individual with ASD.   Some individuals with ASD do not speak, while others love to talk but have difficulty using conversational speech and/or understanding the nuances of language and nonverbal cues when talking with others. In each case, the goal of speech and language therapy is to help the person communicate in more useful and functional ways.

When appropriate, our Speech and Language Therapists implement the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) to assist in expressing thoughts, emotions and feelings through pictures including iPad / iPhone applications. In addition our therapists are well versed in Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and can be taught and used at home, in the classroom and community.

Speech and Language therapy typically begins with an evaluation to assess verbal aptitudes and challenges. The evaluation results form the basis of a treatment plan that includes measurable data-driven goals. Treatment notes of daily progress are sent to our internet-based parent portal to ensure parents have access to information regarding progress on an on-going basis.

For more information on Speech-Language Evaluations, please see “Evaluations” under “Children and Adolescent Services” tab.
